Germany to End Informal Schengen Visa Appeals from July 1

From July 1, 2025, significant changes will take effect for those applying for Schengen visas through the German embassy.

What’s Changing?

Germany is ending the informal remonstration process worldwide. This process previously allowed applicants to contest a visa refusal by submitting an appeal directly to the embassy. After July 1, this informal appeal option will no longer be available.

What Replaces It?

If your visa is rejected after this date, you’ll have two options:

  • Submit a new visa application, or

  • File a formal complaint with the Berlin Administrative Court within one month of receiving the decision.

Why the Change?

The German Federal Foreign Office tested the removal of the remonstration procedure in several visa sections in 2023. The results showed that eliminating informal appeals increased processing efficiency and reduced wait times for applicants.

How to Prepare

With no informal appeal available, it's crucial to get your application right the first time. Double-check all documents, meet all requirements, and consider professional guidance if needed.

Germany has also launched digital tools, such as the Consular Services Portal, to help applicants apply for national visas more easily.
